Colorado Family Kept Out Of Own Home For 8 Months By Squatters Claiming Adverse Possession

Have you heard about house squatters before?

We do not hear about this often in Canada  but it here about these stories in the US.

This family in Colorado was out of town for a few months when they discovered that their house had been taken over by squatters who claimed they now own the property.

They had to wait eight months for a court to kick those squatters out.

The squatters claimed they had adverse possession.

Adverse possession laws, which are different in every state, allowed people to take control of abandoned property on the condition that they maintain it and continue to pay utilities and taxes.

Yesterday, a judge in Colorado finally sided with the homeowners and gave the squatters 48 hours to get out.

Have you ever heard of a strange scenario like this before?

  1. That is insane that it took 8 months to get their house back. I’m pretty sure here in BC the cops could just kick the squatters out the day that the family returned.
