Is it OK to get a discount if you are good looking?

Would you turn down a discount because you were good looking?

On Consumerist, a customer received a discount for having the best “Butt” and “Good looking”. This was simply a joke by the server but honestly it brings up a good question, do good looking people get discounts?

Now, to be honest I have never worked a retail job or a job where I could give discounts to anyone.

I believe that if a woman was more attractive than the average woman that she would receive (whether fair or unfair) a discount in many situations.

Attractiveness research indicates that men tend to be attracted to young and beautiful women with bodily symmetry. This will only increase in the future the emphasis men place on women’s looks.

I think that part of the reason that attractive people receive discounts is that when someone is beautiful, they have many other positive attributes that make the attractive person more likeable (attractive people are assumed to be more extroverted, popular, and happy) and are more likely to get a discount.

Have you ever seen a merchant or friend receive a discount because they were good looking?

  1. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen an obvious discount exctly, but I have seen attractive people get away with things that regular people do not. Getting out of tickets, getting more doors held for them, more attention at stores, etc. I think everyone should be treated with respect, but I also think that men and women are both designed to be extra nice to people they consider attarctive… makes evolutionary sense!

    1. I am in the frame of mind where I like to think that I do not apply the HALO effect to people (give attractive people the benefit of the doubt) but as I get older, I care more about what is between their head vs what they look like)!

  2. I think more than discounts it is better service. The classic example is a night club where the bouncer picks out the good looking people to go in first. The same kind of thing happens in lots of industries. The ‘discount’ on the receipt is pretty funny though. Good way for a server to suck up for tips.

    1. I think MM ht it on the head. I see some folks get better service – particularly women from men. Also, it is a great way to make more in tips. Get them to like you, get them to laugh, get them to feel special and enjoy their experience and you’ll make more dough!
