Community Volunteer Income Tax Program in Canada

We have an amazing program in Canada called the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program where Canadians who are not able to prepare their income tax and benefit returns by themselves get free assistance.

It is a partnership between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organizations which host tax preparation clinics and arrange for volunteers to prepare tax returns for eligible individuals.

The CRA provides training, tax software, and a network of coordinators across the country to help the community organizations and volunteers deliver the program.

Each year together with many volunteers and community organizations, they help over half a million Canadians file their tax returns.

How am I eligible for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program?

Couple Up to $35,000
One adult with child Up to $30,000

Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:

How do I become a Community Volunteer Income Tax Program volunteer?

If you have a basic understanding of income tax and want to give some time to your community you can volunteer.

As a volunteer with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program you will:

I feel this is a worthy volunteer activity and have even done this in the past. It felt great helping Canadians that could not afford other tax preparation services.

  1. I just looked into this and it looks like the registration is over for volunteering.

    From their site:
    “Registration Dates

    If you are interested in registering to become a CVITP volunteer, the registration period is from October 1st to January 31st.”
